Brews, Views, and Belgian Delights: A Day in Brussels

Welcome to Brussels, the vibrant heart of Belgium, where medieval splendour meets modern flair, and where I had only a day to spare.
And if you’re wondering whether that’s enough, well it is. That’s just about enough time to do the most touristy things and go pub hopping to indulge in the best Belgian beers and for the sweet-toothed, chocolates and not to forget, the waffles! Btw, I really was there only for the beer and it did not disappoint!

First stop, the magnificent central square of the city of Brussels. The Grand Place, and which is surrounded by the guild houses, the City Hall and the Maison du Roi, transforming it into a square, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

At the center of the Grand Place Square towers the magnificent Brussels Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville), a masterpiece of Gothic architecture adorned with elegant spires and intricately carved statues. Its imposing facade serves as a focal point, commanding attention and admiration from all who behold it. Surrounding the square are rows of meticulously preserved guildhalls, each boasting its own unique design and decorative motifs. These centuries-old buildings showcase a harmonious blend of architectural styles, ranging from Gothic and Baroque to neoclassical. The facades of the guildhalls are adorned with ornate gables, elaborate stonework, and colourful statues depicting saints, mythological figures, and historical personalities. Truly a sight to behold and if you’re one who loves gothic architecture, this is not to be missed.

I had done enough research to have Mannekin Pis feature in my list of things to see, but really it’s just a small bronze statue of a naked boy urinating into a fountain’s basin. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Manneke Pis

I do not get the fuss around this. But, the most famous legend claims that the statuette depicts a young boy who saved Brussels from disaster. The enemy was at the gates ready to bring down the city walls with gunpowder. Fortunately, this little boy who happened to be around desperately needed to relieve himself and in doing so he extinguished the fuse.
Well, I’m happy if that’s true ! But anyway, post the Mannekin Pis, I gave Jeanneke Pis a miss.

And then I ditched history and architecture and moved towards the gastronomical delights.

Leonidas Chocolates – I’m not an overly crazy chocolate person. But Leonidas is a different deal. And I didn’t even know that they were a big deal. As soon as I had indulged in their hot chocolate from the chocolate fountain, I had lost all rhyme and reason.

Belgian Waffles – Best eaten on the street-side shops. I don’t think I need say anything more. Just look at the pictures!

Delirium Café – And then, the only place I really only wanted to be at. If you’re as much a beer fanatic as me, this is the place to be in when visiting Brussels. With 8 bars and more then 2000 kinds of beers awaiting you, this is literally called Delirium Village.

Well, that was my day, which transformed into night at the lovely Delirium Village.

If you’re wondering, all these places are in and around Grand Place Square and easily walkable. But comfortable footwear should be a priority should you decide to spend more than half a day testing and tasting the Belgian brews. Cheers!
