BUDDHA DORDENMA

A massive 51 metres tall golden Buddha sitting on top of a gilded meditation hall located in the mountains of Kuenselphodrong Nature Park in Thimphu. The Buddha Dordenma is the statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha and it houses a total of 125,000 miniature Buddhas in bronze, 100,000 of which are 8 inches tall and the rest 12 inches tall.

The Buddha Dordenma statue is believed to fulfil two ancient prophecies. The first prophecy was that a Buddhist statue would be built in the region to “bestow blessings, peace, and happiness to the whole world” and a second prophecy which stated that “Buddha would arrive to restore peace”. The statue was thus built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of  King Jigme Singye Wangchuck and in fulfilment of the prophecies.

This high and mighty statue was actually built in China and transferred to Bhutan in pieces where it was assembled into the gigantic and magnificent piece of sculpture that can be seen. It’s surrounded by statues of golden fairies paying tribute to the Buddha. This golden marvel is a sight to behold and is visible from even the furthest locations in Thimphu.
