The Falcon God’s Fortress – Edfu

The city of Edfu is another major historical site covered as part of the Nile Cruise. When going from Aswan to Luxor, the ship docks at the banks of Edfu in the early morning hours of the 3rd day. But reaching the actual temple site feels like time travel. A horse-drawn carriage whisks you from the ship through the narrow city lanes to one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples.

The Temple of Edfu

The temple of Edfu is dedicated to the falcon headed god King Horus and is also well known as the Temple of Horus. The son of Osiris and Goddess Isis, King Horus was believed to be the god of war. The temple complex consists of his birth house and the residential palace. The entrance is about 118 feet tall and flanked on either side by granite statues of Horus in his falcon form. The temple’s looming sandstone walls, both inside and outside are covered in hieroglyphics giving us insights into the religion and way of life during that era.
